About Me

About Me

Heyy there! My name is Courtney and I am so excited you made your way here! A little about me, my husband and I recently moved to the beautiful bluegrass state, we're dog parents to three crazy ones, and I am a major chocoholic and coffee-lover. I love the beautiful things like the outdoors and all if its colors and creatures. My journey has had many twists and turns, but I am so excited and grateful I landed behind the camera. It brings me so much joy.

& Love for Photographs

Before I fell in love with photography, I first worked in a zoo, then in the veterinary world, all the while exploring the biology field and the amazing things it contains! I have always loved being around animals and have a big passion for conservation. Seeing how each species is designed so uniquely amazes me so much! Like did you know elephants have more muscles in their trunk than we have in our whole body?? I can definitely geek out too much haha.

Although my path changed course, I see how God used that time in my life in so many ways. Science always conveyed the details and I fell deeper in love with these small things, and how beautiful and wonderful everything is made. I found that the ingredients that comprise life are worth the attention and admiration they easily don't receive. I believe there are details in our own stories that are glossed over in the same way. My parents originally immigrated from South Africa, just before I was born, uprooting all the way across the sea to be in a land of opportunity. I never thought much about this when I was younger until I found I had said the word "bath" a bit funny. Today, I have realized just how much this detail about myself is such a special and dear part of me. My family still there, the food, definitely the chocolate, the culture, the nature, and all my parents sacrificed for me to live where I do now. I truly believe there are unique compositions of all of us and photographs are glimpses of such, little windows to our soul.

When I first picked up the camera, it was like when I first tried my first mocha...an addiction was created immediately. I adore the idea that you can reveal pieces of the soul with a picture. In my journey, I came across a quote that has encapsulated my entire love for the essence of photography; I have found that it is much like "painting with light" and this makes my creative heart burst. I love how an image can hold so much, truly our lives are like beautiful masterpieces even in the most mundane moments. To capture a photograph is to display a painting of a person, a soul, all the things we hold dear and close to our hearts. To live is quite magical and it amazes me how a photograph can freeze all of these dear memories allowing us to gaze at them forever. It can stir up emotion like no other as it is like rereading a page in the novel of a life. It carries so much more weight than just an image and unveils this ever so gently like a masterful painting.

The ultimate moment when I knew that portraiture was my passion was when the person on the other side of the camera would sneak a peek during the session and say "Aww, wait! That's me??" We tend to see ourselves through an entirely different lens and my giddiness reaches a whole new level when I can share with you a whole new perspective on yourself. I truly desire to capture the true you, everything that makes you light up, to reveal all that is so beautiful about being yourself. Those candid moments where you get to see how amazing your REAL smile is and how your laugh lights up the world a bit more than what it was before. I adore capturing what is special to you- those fragments of your life that you never want to forget, the love of your life, your best friends or all that you want to share with others. Thank you for trusting me with a snapshot of your story. Now let's get you a flawless painting of what makes you preciously you.

Impactful Images

I have a deep desire to focus on not only capturing the essence of who you are, but carrying that forward to organizations in need. An even deeper passion of mine has been creating Impactful Images where every photoshoot package includes a donation to a non-profit trying to better the world one step at a time. Every picture you take with me is making a difference! Donations go directly to one of these organizations listed, but I would love to touch base with you on any cause you are passionate about as well or if there is one specific to you that stands out! Let's make a difference one image at a time.

I am in love with the story-telling in a photograph

I began Essentia Photography with the hopes of unveiling the raw beauty and story of who others are. Essentia is latin for essence and existence, and I just found it so beautiful. This word stuck to me like glue as I want my photography to be an authentic and captivating glimpse of the soul.
